Hij voer dwars door een &#8220;gyre\u201d in het noorden van de Stille Oceaan, zoals je kunt zien op onderstaande \u00a0afbeelding.\u00a0 Een \u201cgyre\u201d is een grote cirkelvormige beweging van het zeewater dat veroorzaakt wordt door het draaien van de aarde in combinatie met bepaalde zeestromingen. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hier zag Charles dagelijks stukken plastic langsdrijven. Hij ging op onderzoek uit en zo ontdekte hij dat op deze plek een grotere hoeveelheid plastic dreef dan op andere plekken in de Stille oceaan. Ook zag hij dat het plastic hier niet alleen op het water dreef, maar ook onder water zweefde.
