Seal guards

Seal guards are our eyes, ears, and voice on the Dutch coasts. They can determine whether the seal needs help or not. Often, the wild animal only needs rest and space. We cannot say it enough: the best living environment for every seal is a healthy sea. The seal guards play a very important role in this. Do you want to know more about the work of these heroes?

Each year, dozens of entangled seals are reported. Often, they are trapped in fishing nets, plastic, or other waste. Sometimes it is possible to free the seals on the spot. But sometimes they end up with serious injuries. In those cases, we have to take them in and help them with their recovery.

Seal Agreement

Never before have there been rules or agreements on how or when to rehabilitate seals. Because we want seals to be taken care of safely and responsibly, an agreement was drawn up in 2020 with municipalities, provinces and other seal rehabilitation centres. This sets out how we all deal with seals. An important step in the right direction when it comes to prevention: prevent if possible, rehabilitate if necessary.
