Take a look at the largest specialized seal hospital in Europe! Every day, a team of dedicated veterinarians and seal nurses at the Sealcentre take care for sick, injured or orphaned seals. In the visitor center you are in the middle of the seal hospital and you can watch the care for the seals in different phases of the rehabilitation process. In addition, in the visitor center you will find all information about the two species of seals that can be found in the Netherlands and many fun things to discover.

Visit the seals in 3 stages of rehabilitation, from indoor where they still receive intensive care to the largest outdoor basin. We also organise extra activities on a daily* basis, such as:

  • An exposition about the Sealcentre
  • A fun search throughout the visitor centre
  • Several seal quizzes
  • Feeding presentation

* Our activities depend on the seal nurses’ schedules and varies daily.

Wadden playground

Wadden playground

Ebb and flow are simulated between arbors and islands. Take off your shoes, and let the adventure begin! Climb to the other side with the ropes and catch small animals in the water with a fishing net. Or take a swim on warm days. There is a place to rinse yourself off again.

The moment you put on the VR glasses, you find yourself between the seal mothers and their pups on the beach, in the middle of the Wadden Sea. With the VR glasses on you experience your own influence on nature and you learn what to do and not to do if you see a seal pup on the beach.

Orphaned seal pups are taken care of in summer and winter. And through out the year we help seals that are sick or injured. That makes every visit to the seals different. The number of seals can differ per month, check which seals are currently staying in Pieterburen.

In the Wadden Garden on the edge of the Wadden Playground you will find the Summer Pavilion. Open every weekend from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and daily during the holidays for a cup of coffee, cake, lunch, ice cream or appetizers. Everything is prepared with regional products as much as possible.

Wadden Sea boat tours

Come on board and explore the Wadden Sea with us. We regularly set out by boat to spot seals in the wild and of course to release seals after a period of rehabilitation. There are several boat tours, check the calendar and book your seat on board for an unforgettable experience.

Route by car

The Sealcentre is located in Pieterburen, in the north of the province of Groningen and can be reached via the N361. From Leeuwarden towards Lauwersoog and from Groningen towards Winsum. From there, the Sealcentre is well signposted. There is sufficient parking space.

ROUTE VIA GOOGLE

Public transport

From the central train station in Groningen you take the Arriva stop train (direction Roodeschool) to Winsum station. From the bus stop in Winsum you take bus 68 (direction Leens via Pieterburen) to Pieterburen and get off at bus stop Pieterplein. From there it is about a 150 meter walk to the Sealcentre
